Elevator Music is an ongoing, interactive, multimedia project that uses new technology to position the participant as a performer within the theater of their own history.
The final form will manifest as an interactive landscape that is comprised of large, aestheticized blocks with transformational qualities. Each block will have the capacity to operate as a media container for variable content. These modular elements can be combined such that their relative orientations inform and define a resulting output algorithmically to create the score for a multi-media experience.
The goal of the project is to develop a malleable, narrative instrument that has the potential to be accessed by a variety of communities and can serve as a vessel for an infinite number of stories. The essence of the work is not primarily located within the environment itself but can instead be found within the resulting scores created by the participants. Collaborators have the opportunity to submit media content, to participate in workshops that explore the relationship between volume and memory, and to create unique compositions using the final instrument. The parameters of engagement are defined by the act of exploratory construction which recalls childhood processes.
Elevator Music is a reflection on the convergence of memory, childhood fantasy and personal mythos; it is a physical manifestation of the soundtrack that continually informs our experiences and perspectives.
