Technical Artist, Material Scientist & Engineer


Tom Orvis is a Material Scientist from Berkeley, California. He received a Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Science from SUNY Stony Brook in 2015 and is currently a fellow and PhD Candidate at the University of Southern California. He is a current recipient of the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Fellowship and has received past funding from NSF REU, Lawrence E. Noonan Memorial Fund, the J. Roberts Fisher Memorial Fund, and the NSF STEM.

Tom is passionate about increasing the scientific literacy of the public and lobbies for transparency within the scientific community. He has maintained a longstanding interest in the intersection of science and art. Tom has collaborated with Eli in various capacities on a number of past projects, including “Please Sit,” “An Algorithm of the American Nuclear Family,” “Family Anthology: Mitosis and Meiosis,” “Tiger Play” and “Today Is Your Birthday.”

Tom’s current research concerns the development of novel oxide materials for electronic applications, thin film surfaces and interfaces, and materials characterization methods.
